hi, you’ve found my corner of the internet.

…and here’s my portfolio.

About me

Hi, I’m Karen Patricia Rivera (or KP).

I’m a writer, editor, communicator, and massive nerd.

I speak Spanish fluently, and some conversational Japanese and French. I have a lot of opinions about films, comics, books, video games, and even (!) music. I have been told that I am funny, kind, likable, and quick to learn. This means that I will make you laugh at my own expense at times, and work on some exceptionally bad puns. I don’t know of any writer or editor that does not engage in some sort of pun foolery.

Professionally, I am currently a freelancer looking to jump back into the workforce. I run editorial processes for companies, develop style guides, film videos, and write blog content (or edit said content). Previously, I worked as a communications associate for a sustainability nonprofit in Boston, and as a breaking news reporter for the New York bureau of two Japanese newspapers. I was based out of the United Nations HQ for almost five years, and probably ran a full marathon’s worth around the campus and surrounding streets in Midtown East. My plans have been foiled by rocket launches and nuclear tests thanks to North Korea, and I’ve stayed past 2 a.m. trying to obtain drafts of treaties, resolutions, and statements. These were par for the course as a reporter, but those are the events that stand out.

When it comes to videos, photos, and words — I’m your gal. I can produce, film, script, and edit all the things.

Software-wise, I use Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Words-wise, I use a computer, sometimes a pen, a pencil, and some creamy, heavy gauge paper.

If you have ideas, a scrap of an idea, a thread dangling from a thought sweater, contact me. Let’s snip that idea loose and make something functional, informative, and fun out of it.
